In the Beginning
Tea.
Wait, what?
You heard that right. In the beginning, tea.
That’s what happened the day I started this blog (elsewhere, on WordPress). I got up on a gloomy Saturday morning, knowing that the next day I’d be enjoying my one cup of coffee for the week, and I bought myself four kinds of tea from Todd & Holland. The tea will arrive in a gorgeous black box with their signature waterfall of ribbons. And I will be happy.
You might wonder why I would begin THE NEW DAY OF MY COFFEE BLOG with a tea purchase. I could psychoanalyze that nicely, but really I think I’m just a slam dunk for the mailers that come into my inbox on gloomy days, promising the first taste of spring.
(Take note, if you are a tea marketer.)
On the THE NIGHT OF THE NEW DAY OF MY COFFEE BLOG, I will be grinding some gorgeous little beans from Blue Bottle. They were a gift from a friend—the very friend who first heard my intentions to foray into the world of coffee. The cute little beans have “notes of raspberry, chocolate, and molasses.” At least that’s what the package says.
I did all the cool things one does to get these beans from bean to drink-it-up cup. And?! They tasted to me exactly like… coffee.
(Forgive me, coffee aficionados.)
I am quite sure it is just that I don’t know what I’m supposed to be tasting. Like a butterfly who is used to sipping on daisies, when first introduced to a field of lavender.
I mean, I even did a fancy pour over thing, with the other gift from my friend: a totally classy little glass pour over number, with a kind of cork jacket around its waist, complete with leather cord. But, no raspberries. No chocolate. No molasses. Just a nice cup of coffee with cream.
(I do love my cream.)
In the end, I must say this: even without the promise of extra flavors, I’ve already come to look forward to my Sunday coffee. It’s been a mere three weeks. And I’m even considering my very first coffee bean purchase, at a nearby shop I truly love. All on my little butterfly own.
I’ll let you know when I take wing down to their place. Yes, indeed. I’ll spill the coffee beans, so to speak—just for thee.
